De Gruyter · Roles, Challenges, and Sustainability of Australian Journals: A Survey of EditorsThis article reports the findings of a survey of 139 editors of Australian journals. The survey investigated the editors’ views on distinct roles of Australian journals, the potential conflicts between national roles and internationalization, and the factors affecting long-term viability of journals. Findings show that editors highly value the role of Australian journals in linking research and practice in the Australian context and sustaining local disciplinary communities. While the majority of editors (76%) see little to no conflict between internationalization and maintaining local roles, some see challenges in balancing local relevance with international appeal. The survey highlights a link between journal rankings, author incentives, and the ability to attract quality submissions, particularly for journals focusing on local issues. Attracting quality submissions and qualified reviewers emerged as the most important factors for long-term viability, with the latter also being the most significant challenge. The study highlights a strong reliance on voluntary work as 45% of editors receive no compensation for their roles, a concern for the sustainability of journals. Open access strategies vary, but 88% of journals were satisfied with their current publishing model. There was low satisfaction with support from parent organizations in areas such as training and professional development.

I noticed the German translation of Planify could use some improvements. Some of the text strings made no sense and were outright wrong about how the app works.

Then I noticed some peculiarities of some of the source text strings — lots of duplicates, differing in capitalization, weird phrasings, etc.

Went into the code to investigate in hopes of eliminating duplicates and learn the context in which they're used.

If Chrome and Firefox will, at some point, allow only a fixed list of local fonts (shipped with the browser or otherwise) to be used under guise of privacy, I’ll agree the world went completely insane and HTML will no longer be a suitable format for documents, as opposed to “apps.”

#JOSM had several furries sitting around a map discussing it in the MOTD yesterday, one furry's a coincidence, two furries in a row is certainly a pattern, and a welcome one.

Not sure "i18n" is particularly parseable to people who need it, in similar how "a11y" isn't particularly accessible to the illiterate and really wonder if we can drop both in favor of just spelling it?

Salesium (my startup) is in upstate NY, launching from Albany. we are growing slowly and carefully (media buys in major metro areas are expensive.) but we are also close to the Canadian border, and are partnering with the Central NY Rotary District, so there is potential to "slop" over, particularly because adjacent Rotary Districts do span the international border.

I think I'm generally satisfied with how I operate computers. It feels similar to playing a musical instrument: there is this satisfying feeling of being able to achieve things "through" the instrument without thinking *about* the instrument.

But there is one pain point I have regardless of which DE or even OS I use, and I don't yet know how to solve it:

Switching keyboard layouts.

I type a lot in Ukrainian. But I also type a lot in English or run commands or use programs that don't understand keyboard shortcuts when the layout isn't English / Latin script.

(I actually use Programmer's Dvorak for English, but that's a different story that just makes the layouts even more apart from each other than otherwise - because of the number row and punctuation differs).

And I'm pretty strongly a keyboard-oriented user. I do most of stuff using the keyboard.

But I often find myself using the wrong layout to type something or to send commands / shortcuts. Again and again.

(That gets even more complicated when running virtual machines - imagine having to think about nested combinations of keyboard layouts... Agh.)

It just *feels wrong* to have to be switching layouts back and forth *at all*. To have to manage *state* in your head about which layout you are in, all the time.

I envy those users who manage to live mostly with a single keyboard layout.

I am actually thinking about the possibility of using some kind of "out-of-band" input channel to "dictate" the layout I want at all times. For each single keystroke.

Something like the pedal on the piano.

That would be so awesome...

The display of titles of resources in the Pangloss Collection goes multilingual!
All the titles in the Collection's rich are displayed, along with their language code.
To depositors: do go ahead and add titles in the original language, in areally relevant languages..., in addition to the 2 languages of the interface (fr+en).
