The Kelso Dunes tower impressively in the eastern Mojave Desert, forming the second-tallest dune system in California. There are no half measures on this hike - be sure to climb all the way to the top!

Good day!

Reviewing Book2 (about 33% of the way in a day). My editing skills had obviously improved by Book3.

So, more of doing that on a mild day, my windows at last open. I’ll walk, do some cleaning.

An outing is planned for the 7th, & another hike will happen soon.

A wide (too wide) trail winds around tree in a pine forest where there’s minimal brush and the grass is green. The trail is tinted a reddish brown from the needles the larch trees shed the autumn before. The sky that’s barely visible through the branches is blue.

Ich war Fahrradfahren.
Es war sehr warm.

So ähnlich wie neulich, aber doch anders.
Zuerst Obere Zeterklippe, verdeckte Ilse, Ferdinandstein, dann Mittagspause bei der Plessenburg. Weiter ging’s über den„missing link“ zum Kammweg. Zum Abschluss noch mal rauf zu „Jack the ripper“.

So began my last hike.

Time to shift my attention to Book2, A River in Each Hand, & preparing it for publication.

Because Book3 is a prequel, it served as the perfect lead-in to Book2 (& Books 1,4,5).

I’m so ready to do this.

The heart of springtime at Sleeping Giant State Park, Hamden, Connecticut. April 29, 2025, 1:15 PM.

A deep blue sky with a few diaphanous swirls of haze. Climbing a narrow ravine with walls that slope upward at about a 45-degree angle to our right and left. A forest of mature hardwoods towers above us. The midday sun is directly ahead, shining through the treetops, silhouetting the tree trunks and limbs while backlighting the bright buds and small emerald green emerging leaves. The floor of the ravine is a jumble of gray rocks and boulders, fallen branches and last autumn's brown fallen leaves. Like the tree branches above them, bright green ferns and leafy shoots on the forest floor are clad in the bright greens of the new growing season.

Early evening beneath a soft blue sky. The ground slopes gently from our left to right. Walking a footpath through a stately forest of white pines with a few tall hardwoods mixed in, leafless at this early stage of spring. On the forest floor, ground-hugging green ferns and leafy shoots are beginning to cover the dark reddish brown ground. To our right, about a dozen young pines are growing. Straight ahead, the sun is shining down towards us through the branches.

This is the story of the erosion battle in the Rockies. To fight it, the forest service places barriers to channel rainwater.

Then, mountain bikers go around it, creating a new trail and, eventually, a new channel. There are trail channels the bikes have cut that are absurdly deep.

To be fair, I’ve seen lazy hikers go around it, too, rather than step over it.

Amidst lightly forested terrain, a plastic barrier for channeling runoff appears absurdly out of place to the left of the trail.

A tan, dirt trail running through woods and grass. Light-colored (blue-white-gray) rocks are embedded in the trail at multiple points. In the forefront of the picture and to the left of the trail is a very thick tree trunk, somewhat gnarled and knotted. Grass and shrubbery can be seen on both sides of the trail along with some leafless trees with a great number of branches going in all directions. The pale blue sky can be seen in the distance.

Yesterday, I went exploring. Literally. At each juncture, I took the trail least traveled. What an amazing experience!

About 50F/10C, slight breeze, sunny. I topped a ridge & witnessed a snowstorm on Lolo Peak.

Spring has sprung & it was a great day!

Across multiple ridges of evergreens, a snow covered mountain is engulfed in a snowstorm, the clouds having obscured its summit, yet the closest trees are in the sun, which was to the left.

Spring is in the air (along with tons of pollen), Sleeping Giant State Park, Hamden, Connecticut. Thursday, April 24, 2025, 5:14 PM.

Walking a footpath along a wooded mountainside. The mountain slopes steeply upward to our left but flattens out quite a bit over the stretch the trail runs across. The ground is rather rocky. Other than a sprinkling of evergreens, most of the trees lack foliage but their branches are covered in spring buds. Below the trees, shrubs are sprouting bright emerald leaves. On the forest floor, dozens of leafy shoots and stalks of new grass are springing from the brown remnants of last autumn's leaves, also sporting the bright greens of early springtime. Above us, the evening sun is shining through the branches straight ahead, providing a backlit glow to all the greenery.

Placid waters that appear to be a pond, but which are actually McDonald Creek, are backed by pines and larches that become more scattered as they ascend a steep slope that's marked by horizontal bands of bare rock. At the top, the rock summit forms a crown, an oval on its face with a shadow within making it appear to be a cat's eye.
