ZoomWelcome! You are invited to join a meeting: Taguette for Qualitative Data Analysis. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email about joining the meeting. In this session, Vicky Rampin will walk participants through using Taguette, a free and open source qualitative data analysis tool. Participants will learn how to upload documents, analyze them, and export them. Vicky will also go over some common ways to use Taguette exports to glean additional insights from the process and the data. Vicky Rampin is the Librarian for Research Data Management and Reproducibility and the subject specialist for data science and computer science at New York University. Vicky supports researchers of all levels and disciplines in creating well-managed, reproducible scholarship through instruction, consultation, outreach, and infrastructure building. They loves all things open and contributes to a number of open projects as a part of her job at NYU and in her spare time (like Taguette!).

How transparent is your #Research process?
An #AuditTrail is your research roadmap, a detailed account of every decision, method, and reflection. By documenting your process from design to analysis, you enhance the transparency and credibility of your work. It’s a cornerstone of #QualitativeResearch, promoting #Trustworthiness and enabling others to evaluate and build on your findings.

ZoomWelcome! You are invited to join a meeting: Appropriate Uses of AI for Qualitative Analysis. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email about joining the meeting. The rise of Generative-AI has resulted in heated debate in the qualitative research community, with some heralding this new era with enthusiasm whilst others look at what’s occurring with horror. Whether you’re an advocate or a sceptic, come along to discuss the issues and consider whether and how it might be appropriate to integrate AI tools into the qualitative analysis workflow. This session begins by mapping the landscape; providing some historical context and outlining the three core genres AI tools in the qualitative data analysis (QDA) space: the use of general-purpose chatbot tools (such as ChatGPT and similar), a plethora of new Apps harnessing Gen-AI functionality, and the integration of Gen-AI features into established qualitative software platforms. We then focus in on how Gen-AI integrations can be used in methodologically appropriate ways to assist QDA in different contexts. Current options are outlined, demonstrated and discussed: AI Summaries, AI Code Suggestions / Coding, and AI Chatting. We then consider how and when these tools can be used appropriately and in combination with human interpretation at different stages of the analytic workflow. This includes ethical issues including model development, informed consent, and authorship, and methodological implications such as interpretive capabilities, the changing role of digital tools and collaborative analysis. There will be opportunities to try out selected AI tools for aspects of the qualitative analysis process during the workshop. Speaker: Christina Silver, Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology and Director of CAQDAS Networking Project, University of Surrey, c.silver@surrey.ac.uk

Large Language Models in Qualitative Research: Can We Do the Data Justice?

"Given the importance of qualitative methods to human-computer interaction, we use the tensions surfaced by our participants to outline guidelines for researchers considering using LLMs in qualitative research and design principles for LLM-assisted qualitative data analysis tools."
