Me, to a visitor to our event: "You came here without knowing anybody? I don't think I'm at the level where I would do that."

Visitor: "Dude you're one belt away from Instructor level. You are definitely good enough to do that."

Me: "I am? Is that what my belt means? I'm still new to this belt system."

The after party had feijoada, followed by a performance by a local batucada group. The group has like 20 drummers and 6 dancers and really played up a storm. I wonder if that music made the Brazilians feel at home.

And then after the batucada group finished, our guests all grabbed instruments and played their own samba, and then did a drunken roda. For all I know they might still be going. I ducked out at 11pm.

Overall it was a very positive and affirming event. Mestra made clear to everyone that we were not to hurt each other and to respect boundaries. My professora got acknowledged over and over for her hard work. We had more mestras than mestres and a classmate of mine talked positively about seeing women in charge, rather than the typical male-dominated groups. #capoeira

What do the colors mean? I don't know! Our group is new to this belt system. This time the batizado process was to have all the people getting belts play guests (not getting belts) of the same level for a few rounds, and then have the mestres/professores buy in and play a couple of rounds. Except for my level it was just me and one other person so we really got worked over. I think I played 10 rounds between the equal levels and the higher ups. #capoeira

#capoeira Batizado day 2 complete! Midday workshop focusing on self defense and takedowns. Then in the afternoon a kid's workshop, kids batizado, adults workshop, and roda. I started running out of energy in the adult workshop, had to really ration my playtime. I kept in mind that I still have to perform maculele and a couple of dance sequences in tomorrow's show, plus my own batizado and ending roda.

#capoeira tonight: First day of Batizado! Kid's workshop, followed by a kids' batizado, then a maculele workshop for adults, then a roda. This time felt more relaxed and comfortable than previous batizados. There's a benefit to us being independent of our previous group. Lots of people from other states: New York, Kansas, Texas, California. Good vibes all around.

#capoeira tonight: Last regular class before batizado begins! Starting Thursday, 3 days of workshops culminating in a performance and troca de cordão on Saturday afternoon. Because we have like 70 people getting cords it's split into little kids on Thursday, 8-11 year olds on Friday, and teens and adults on Saturday.
