The targets are DOS/386, if possible Amiga AGA (I do have a working build, but it's terribly slow) and the GameBoy Advance. I use a custom C90 3D engine.
Inspiration:
System Shock, Marathon 2, Doom 2 RPG, Phantasy Star I-IV, Albion (1995), Strife, Shining the Holy Ark, Wizardry, Etrian Odissey, X-Men and general Cyberpunk.

This would be my happy place too. I feel better knowing they used an Amstrad to write C64 assembler. Makes me feel less bad about coding my assembler in VIM.

There’s a real thrill in seeing this for the first time, I got it when I made the Atari 2600 cart, GameBoy cart and Speccy tape and now I have it again with the Master System cart. This isn’t the final cart, it won’t fit in a case (or properly in the SMS) with a chip holder #IndieDev #RetroDev #RetroGaming
Continuing #retrodev digging today, I tried to set up CPCtelera and CDTC but neither could build their SDCC on macOS so that’s pending. I did get DeZog working for ZX and Next though.
I also note VS64 got a commit today to improve Oscar64 debugging!
That’ll be me for a while. Back to working on the Amiga stuff again soon.

With some more fiddling I got VIC20 Oscar64 source-level debugging sort of working with VSCode and VICE using the VS64 extension. It seems to ignore the -O0 compiler flag though so the debug line jumps around all over the place. VS64 doesn’t really support VIC20 or Oscar64 yet so

I’d seen it before where it was a bytecode system and quite slow, but it's been changed to compile straight to 6502 since. It might not be an entirely fair comparison here, but my "level map" example in O64 is half the size of TRSE's and it's ... just C.
VIC20 support is little sparse but I can peek and poke memory so what else does it really need?
Had a look again at Millfork, KickC and cc65. First two seem dead now? cc65 gets slagged for poor code, but this article on optimisations has some hints that really help. It’s called “advanced” but I write my Amiga C a lot like this anyway, like asm

No real idea how it compares to TRSE code though.
Messing around in TRSE. Got a "level map" loading from a compressed file and poked to the VIC-20 screen. Ship it!
A bit cramped, but it makes the flow of the battle much clearer now. The messages will be improved, of course!
All names, graphics and moves are placeholders.
I have to admit that even for me, it was hard to follow the battles sometimes and I had to employ breakpoints to better understand what was going on.
I found CrossZGB now which looks like it does a lot of GameBoy boilerplate for you. Worth a dig.

If nothing else, it can use png files for assets instead of me trying to use Windows editing tools via Wine.
