All saved tomato seeds from last year have sprouted up and the tomatillo seeds I gathered from the ground in the garden a month ago are up too. Heat mat turned off. They were started on April 1.

Hello! I forgot to make an intro post when I moved to this instance. Ope!
I am Nessie. For entertainment, I make messes and then try and figure out how to clean them up. Aka I’m an artist, haha.
I’m interested in lots of stuff! Stuff like this:
#Poorskills #Repurposing #Degrowth #ZeroWaste #SolarPunk #HopePunk #Gardening #ScratchCooking #SeedSaving #HouseKeeping #SimpleLiving #Dyslexia #ElderCare #Biking #SlowLiving #Drawing #PenAndInk #MixedMediaArt #AltText #DisabilityRights
And a bunch of other things that’ll pop up as I go along. Pleased to meet you all and I hope you have a wonderful day!
First tomatoes are up, peppers are growing fast, and some new growth on the overwintered Red Marconi sweet pepper that I pruned and fertilized.

"Our desire to preserve is strongly linked to a narrative of loss, both for biodiversity writ large and for rare heirloom seeds. But we recognize the need for biodiversity and destroy it in the same breath. What if we protected the Amazon instead of just the genetics within it? What if we supported small-scale diversified agriculture instead of industrialized monoculture?”

tomatoes always sprout a little faster than peppers. these two were planted on the same day, a little less than two weeks ago.
Capsicum annuum have been planted. 5 pots each of saved seed. Two sweet, one hot. California Wonder, Red Marconi, and Jalapeno. Sieved potting mix to remove the chunks of wood and rocks. On a 17 watt heat mat with a clear cover, and under one LED panel adjusted to about 220 µMol/m2/S. Temperature warmed from 63F / 17C to 78F / 26C in 2 hours or less.
@Pollinators That’s really good to have them around.
I’m intrigued by the sweet red egg plant seeds. I’ve never seen any looking like those before.
Here we call egg plants aubergines but they are almost exclusively shades of purple in colour or a plain white. #HeirloomPlants #SeedSaving
@Broadfork. Good afternoon Broadfork. The Seed Savers Exchange of Decorah, Iowa is local vegetable seeds as far as local goes. We are members. The seed catalog is lovely. The pepper and tomato varieties are hard to equal. The varieties rotate in and out. The Seed Savers Exchange also has a historical Apple tree orchard. Some years they have sold historic apple tree varieties. #gardening, #seedsaving, #heirloomplants, #growyourown, #minnesota.

alliance of native seed keepers (AONSK) a non-GMO Indigenous-owned seed & benefit company who got their first building, is raising funds for various things like: offering resources for seed-saving/seed-banks for Indigenous growers, building repairs, decolonizing the process of contract growing, managing a seed sanctuary of ancestral seeds, giving back to other Indigenous communities, & many so many other cool things you can read about below:

In Australia, many public libraries offer seeds that patrons can "borrow" and later (optionally) replenish with harvested seeds.
More specifically, here's a list of libraries in Victoria that offer seed-sharing initiatives: https://www.plv.org.au/initiatives/seed-libraries/
Note that individual links just point to each library system's home page, and more digging is necessary to find details about specific lending programs (and sometimes also community learning workshops). Or just ask your local librarian!
For Tchida, seed saving is a natural outcropping of her lifelong exploration of finding ways to support the environment.
“This is such an obvious and easy way,” she says. “The connection you make intrinsically with the plants throughout their whole growth process is so much fun.”

"Whether you’re new to seed saving or want to brush up on the time-honored practice, these seed-saving basics are a smart place to start."
They also have a section where you can swap seeds with other people. USA only, I believe.

@alyssa @Pollinators @feinschmeckergarten We have the Heritage Seed Library where members (£21 per year) can select six seed packets from the annual seed list until February 2025.
Seeds are only able to be sent within England, Wales and Scotland and not Northern Ireland or overseas due to trading difficulties directly arising from Brexit.
We need people in Great Britain to join and then make use of this organisation.
