Surveillance capitalism is the same as climate change, but for data:
- Some people have been warning about its consequences for years
- Most people don't care because they don't feel concerned, they can't see it affecting them
- A few companies are making a lot of damage with the help of governments
- When we will face the consequences it will be too late
- We can still do something about it, and the sooner the better
@thibaultamartin Not to mention ho much surveillance capitalism feeds into climate brekdown.
There's a suspicious correlation I'm reading a book about...
@thibaultamartin both due to mining and ruining worlds , both extractivist, both racist and colonialist,
@thibaultamartin Eh, you can solve that by blowing up the infrastructure, that doesn't really work for climate change...
Which is the pattern then?
@thibaultamartin I think this is an extremely bad use of the word "is".
@Thibault The difference is one will enslave us, one will kill us.
article about surveillance capitalism in the latest Harpers (disappointing not to see the phrase used anywhere therein, nor any mention of Zuboff, but still):
@thibaultamartin There has already been a lot of damage, tremendous damage. The data harvesting is how they’ve monopolized online ad revenue, which has driven journalism to the point of bankruptcy. We live in the world of the consequences of that, and the psychological profiling of the public is a huge component of it.
@thibaultamartin well said 👍
@thibaultamartin So many conflicts of interests are preventing change, including capitalistic and cyber-domination interests.
The only change that can do something is a radical change of cyberspace architecture and digital system paradigm.
But the Empire doesn't want.
The NSA doesn't want.
The GAFAM doesn't want.
The CIA doesn't want.
Elon Musk and Bezos don't want.
The military in general don't want change, particularily from the Empire, but not only.
@thibaultamartin i'd say this all applies to capitalism in general ;)
