Radio Havana Cuba: a Missing Voice around the World

The good news is that Radio Havana Cuba’s (RHC) signal strength is usually fair or good, and that TRT Ankara has left 6000 kHz with its morning programs. There is therefore no interference with (or complete blanking out of) RHC when RHC is actually on air. But that is a big “when”. You can’t expect a signal for the complete second half of the night anymore – you are lucky when you get to listen to some signal at all.

When that happens, signal strength is usually not an issue, but modulation varies on a generally poor level. When I gave 6000 kHz a try at 04:45 UTC on March 22, you could actually listen to a mailbag show, and get the name of every country they mentioned there. That was followed by the beginning of the second hour of programming, and exactly on the hour. But that was a rare exception.

Punctuality isn’t one of the station’s great strengths, either. There are two hours of programming (and one, two or three blocks of them), but all of it is apparently pre-recorded, be it because of the time of the day when RHC goes on air for North America (and Europe, as it happens), be it for the need to get programs past a censor before airing. The most striking case in point was when Nelson Mandela died on December 5, 2013.
Listeners to RHC English didn’t get any news about it during the second half of the night, i. e. in the morning of December 6, but they did get the full monty during the morning of December 7 UTC.

The Shortwave Bulletin, in its April 13 edition, quotes BC-DX Top News as saying that on April 6, China Radio International had been heard on its Cuban AM relay “for the very first time since a lot of days”. To operate the transmitters successfully, or to find the one that works best, seems to be a challenge, and it would probably take some substantial Chinese investment to make the lame walk again.

RHC’s English website currently offers a stream in Spanish which seems to be rather up-to-date. I haven’t heard their Spanish program on 5040 kHz in a long time.

Regarding my previous comments about HF Underground's bot, fanbot, being stuck in the 49 meter band then suggesting that the 25 meter band should have something on it, well, for those of you who are just discovering this medium, RN da Amazonia should provide good music listening right about now (1630 UTC, 7:30pm Central). Prior to this specified time I heard them play the classic Sergio Mendes "Mas Que Nada".

Reception conditions change over the course of the day, subject to daylight/darkness patterns, but if you're looking for a good place to start, here ya go. Shortwave radio is a great place to find pirates, such as what Radio Free Trumpistan might be someday.

Today I had another crack at repairing my #sony CRF-320 #shortwave #radio - and we have success!

The degraded foam block on the power amplifier board had become conductive (known issue). Having removed it all and cleaned the board with isopropyl, it’s now working at normal volume. Medium wave dial is broken (that’s a job for another day) and the tuning meter needs replacing. But great to hear it working again. Cindy was also very impressed, as you can see.

Finally got my HF radio antenna back up at home after a few weeks down on the ground following Cyclone Alfred.

No it wasn't damaged, just it was taken down a few days before Alfred's arrival to prevent damage, and we only just got around to getting it back up this afternoon.

There are some rather close tree branches, but just trying it as a receive antenna… I've got Radio New Zealand coming in loud and clear on 13690kHz AM.

I'm using the FT-897D's general coverage receiver to pick this up.

China Radio International were also coming in loud (as they often do).

On Shortwave this Weekend

(1) Canada

Pop Shop Radio from British Columbia can be expected with transmission from Winsen/Luhe in Germany at 13:00 UTC (6160 kHz) on Saturday, and at 19:00 UTC (3975 kHz and 6160 kHz) on Sunday.

(2) Finland

Realmix is going on air at 04:00 UTC on Saturday morning – April 5 – and will probably stay there non-stop until Sunday at 17:00 UTC. Following this, another transmission is scheduled a week later, on April 12. The transmitter is located in southwestern Finland.

Also transmitting, but only on Saturday, is Scandinavian Weekend Radio. Their transmission also come from southwestern Finland – like Realmix, SWRadio run a transmitter of their own.

(3) UK, USA

Imaginary Stations is scheduled to air on Saturday at 11:00 UTC (6160 kHz), and three times on Sunday, at 09:00 UTC (6160 kHz), 13:00 UTC (6160 kHz), and 20:00 UTC (on 3975 kHz and 6160 kHz). The transmitters are located in Winsen/Luhe, Germany.

(4) USA

World of Radio (WoR) will be transmitted from Winsen/Luhe at roughly 14:30 UTC (6160 kHz) and 17:30 UTC (6160 kHz) on Saturday, and at 21:00 UTC (3975 kHz and 6160 kHz) on Sunday.
WoR is preceded by a ham radio hobbyists’ program from the U.S., and a short German-language program by the AGDX club (around five minutes before the start of WoR).
