Massive Update on the Food Rescue front!!!

We worked out the contract issues with Food Rescue US (FRUS - foodrescue.us)and we just signed the contract!

We can now begin the rescue efforts in earnest!!!

This is MASSIVE!!!

This initiative started last November,, and while it's had a couple of obstacles, five months from conception to group formation to joining with a national org isn't that long.

We're also going to be joining Food Rescue Alliance (FRA - boulderfoodrescue.org/food-res). They're a US based national "mutual aid of mutual aids" sort of thing. So we can join other food rescue groups and learn from each other.

I'd like to see if there's a state group to join as well. If not, I'd like to start one up. A lot of laws and regulations are state based and learning from other groups in our state would be amazing.

Soooo!!!!

Expect some more updates in the coming weeks.

I'm so excited!!!!

Food Rescue US volunteers pose with boxes of produce in Washington, DC
Food Rescue US · Home | Food Rescue USFood Rescue US engages volunteers to transfer fresh food surpluses from local businesses to social service agencies serving the food insecure

Everyone I know is pulling back, trying to both stock up on everyday essentials and to save money for unforeseen circumstances - esp disruptions in Social Security.

Gone are the days of shopping, going to the movies, and lots of eating out. We only buy what we need now.

Projects like insulating the upstairs are now on hold. Lots of small companies will be way worse off for the wear.

@cobalt123 So yeah, proper drying and storage are crucial with peanuts. I actually picked up a proper food dryer a few months back, so I'll be using that to dry them (and will clean everything thoroughly afterwards).

"This video guides viewers through the process of harvesting and curing peanuts. The presenter demonstrates how to identify mature peanuts, dig them up, and prepare them for drying. They also discuss the importance of proper storage to prevent mold and rancidity."

7.4: Enhancing the local values chain with community gardens feat. Doug Jones

In this episode, Ariel interviews Doug Jones from Waterloo Region Community Garden Network, and he discusses about how the Network was started, what it does, and the benefits of gardening for the health and wellbeing not only for you but for your entire community. We discuss gleaning, food insecurity, access to land, and much more; this is an episode you’re going to want to listen to, especially if rising cost of food and food security are concerns for you these days.

I (Ariel) have included some links to the local organizations he mentions, as well as some that expand on some of the topics we discussed, which you can check out in the YouTube description or on our blog.

"Cuts of 30 to 70% are rumored at USDA next week. NIH & NSF funding is being destroyed & the agencies themselves facing cuts.

About 3,500 nonfederal entomologists depend on these agencies. We're🚨risking research that protects #ecosystems & #foodsecurity."

It's difficult to keep up with all the atrocities, but we amplify the gravity of the losing these experts, the firings, existential threats... of the #TrumpMusk admin.

"There are multiple reasons for why food prices are on the rise. There are major similarities between the FAO food price index and energy prices. ...Transportation costs have increased a lot, which have two consequences. One is simply that costs increase, the other, equally important, is that competition decreases... More than free trade policies, the low cost of transportation has been the main engine for the economic globalization.
