Massive Update on the Food Rescue front!!!

We worked out the contract issues with Food Rescue US (FRUS - foodrescue.us)and we just signed the contract!

We can now begin the rescue efforts in earnest!!!

This is MASSIVE!!!

This initiative started last November,, and while it's had a couple of obstacles, five months from conception to group formation to joining with a national org isn't that long.

We're also going to be joining Food Rescue Alliance (FRA - boulderfoodrescue.org/food-res). They're a US based national "mutual aid of mutual aids" sort of thing. So we can join other food rescue groups and learn from each other.

I'd like to see if there's a state group to join as well. If not, I'd like to start one up. A lot of laws and regulations are state based and learning from other groups in our state would be amazing.

Soooo!!!!

Expect some more updates in the coming weeks.

Everyone I know is pulling back, trying to both stock up on everyday essentials and to save money for unforeseen circumstances - esp disruptions in Social Security.

Gone are the days of shopping, going to the movies, and lots of eating out. We only buy what we need now.

Projects like insulating the upstairs are now on hold. Lots of small companies will be way worse off for the wear.

The University of Michigan’s Consumer Sentiment Index dropped to 50.8 in April, the lowest reading since it was impacted by post-pandemic inflation in 2022 — and the second-lowest on record since the survey began in 1952. According to the release, sentiment has plunged over 30% since December as “growing worries about trade war developments” risk tipping the economy toward recession. Rate expectations At the heart of that anxiety? A sharp increase in cost expectations. Consumers now anticipate prices will climb 6.7% over the next year, the highest expected change since 1981, despite a cooling inflation print in March. The surge reflects worries that President Trump’s sweeping reciprocal tariff policies, which pushed US tariff rates to 100-year highs, could send prices soaring. Indeed, signs of financial strain have already surfaced elsewhere. More Americans are raiding their 401(k)s to cover emergency expenses, while credit stress is mounting. In Q4 2024, the share of credit card accounts making only minimum payments — and those more than 90 days past due — both reached record highs, per the Philadelphia Fed.

@cobalt123 So yeah, proper drying and storage are crucial with peanuts. I actually picked up a proper food dryer a few months back, so I'll be using that to dry them (and will clean everything thoroughly afterwards).

The global supply chains were disrupted in 2020 by the Coronavirus pandemic. In 2022, food prices in the USA increased faster than any year since 1979, due in part to the avian influenza outbreak and the Russian invasion of Ukraine. From the outside it is still a bit hard to comprehend that the US government is dishing out support to farmers because of low commodity prices (even more so considering Musk-Trumps radical cuts in government expenditure) when food prices are on the rise. The cost of raw materials, i.e. the stuff that comes from farms, is, however, a minor share of food prices in rich countries. A global look gives a slightly different picture, with a less dramatic increase than in Europe or the USA. It should be noted that the long term (100 year) trend of food prices was falling until around year 2000, albeit with irregular hikes, mostly associated with oil prices.
