Veirling | #MMIWG #LandBack<p>Hey? I follow the Auschwitz Memorial account. It's really, really hard. There are so many important reasons to follow that account. For me, my entire maternal line were Jews from the boarder region between Germany and Poland before WW2. I've done my best to trace their heritage. They are gone. No records. Very few survivors to note. An entire portion of my family utterly wiped from existence. I know there are better resources out there and I need to reach out. Just kinda sharing my experiences. Anyway, one reason to follow that account. Happy to be able to share it with you.<br> <br> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/CerroAzul?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#CerroAzul</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/CaveArt?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#CaveArt</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/AncientHistory?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#AncientHistory</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/RockArt?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#RockArt</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/Archaeology?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Archaeology</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/PrehistoricArt?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#PrehistoricArt</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/CulturalHeritage?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#CulturalHeritage</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/TimelessLegacy?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#TimelessLegacy</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/HistoryMystery?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#HistoryMystery</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/HumanHeritage?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#HumanHeritage</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/History?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#History</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/Art?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Art</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/Heritage?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Heritage</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/Mystery?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Mystery</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/Ancestors?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Ancestors</a>
Carolynn ni LochlainnMargaret Agnes Ruan McLaughlin, my 2xggma, married Charles McLaughlin, my 2xggpa, on 5 July 1864, while Charles was still in the Union Army. And yet, these two devout Irish-Catholics didn't have their first child until 1872. Recently, I felt compelled to re-examine original documents, including the 1900 Census (which I ADORE). It asks two separate questions: how many children have you had, and how many do you have. This allows the interviewee to account for stillborns, and children born alive but who died in the first few years of life (between censuses, at any rate). It turns out that Margaret and Charles had NINE children, but I had only ever known about the FIVE that survived to adulthood. This one line item in the 1900 US Census is the only evidence I have of their existence!<br> <br> The moral of the story: always check, and recheck, original documents. Not everything is indexed, and there's always something to learn.<br> <br> I'm getting research done at the Venango County Historical Society in Pennsylvania to find birth/death certificates. That's most likely where these children were born, and died - in Oil City. Watch this space for updates. <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/CarolynnNiLochlainn?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#CarolynnNiLochlainn</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/AncestorsAliveGenealogy?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#AncestorsAliveGenealogy</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/ancestors?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#ancestors</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/research?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#research</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/genealogy?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#genealogy</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/FamilySearch?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#FamilySearch</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/FamilyHistory?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#FamilyHistory</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/1900Census?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#1900Census</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/FromPaperToPeople?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#FromPaperToPeople</a>
Robot Diver<p>This morning I was thinking about what a mixed bag of ethnicities I am. I look pretty white, but my mom died of a leukemia that normally affects only men from Mongolia and northern China. Because of that they did a ton of genetic testing and it turns out my family is pretty darn Mongolian. </p><p>It was kind of a gift in spite of the eventual loss my mom, because it was an area I'd been obsessed with since I was a kid for some reason and part of the reason I studied and wrote papers on Vladamir Ussachevsky when i was studying the history of sound synthesis in university. I would dream about standing in the Altai mountains on the regular. Things with my mom were abusive and nasty, but in her passing, I was granted a connection with a place that no longer felt appropriative, but genuine.</p><p>Until I discovered it, I had always struggled with my body image, and some of that was also dysmorphia, but I'm built like a brick shithouse, a Mongolian wrestler. My hiking friends who were gym rats constantly tried to convince me to become a powerlifter. I struggled with that until I finally saw my ancestors written on my body and started to love my stocky frame. </p><p>My family started to crumble around the time my dad died, but in this process I decided to really dig into my roots to try to heal and shine more light on the parts that were blurred and smothered by colonization. It's also why I reclaimed my Irish family name on my other side and started learning Gaeilige. </p><p>As someone who came from abuse and trauma the phrase "your ancestors are watching over you" used to pour ice water down my spine, until i realized you just need to dig deeper. There are beautiful places in your history that you were probably never told about buried under the stories that got told. Queer relatives whose stories you never heard. You get to choose what part of history you carry forward and honour the same way others decided to try to erase them. </p><p>I think about that every time I make buuz, or research how my Mongol relatives intermarried with Galician Jews and how fucking delicious that food must have been and the fact that someone felt they either had to hide that part of their history to survive or some asshole thought it was beneath them. </p><p>It doesn't mean I don't acknowledge that some colonial assholes are also a part of me, but they don't get air time anymore when it comes to how I proceed with my ancestors.</p><p><a href="https://starlite.rodeo/tags/trauma" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>trauma</span></a> <a href="https://starlite.rodeo/tags/ancestors" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ancestors</span></a> <a href="https://starlite.rodeo/tags/roots" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>roots</span></a> <a href="https://starlite.rodeo/tags/healing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>healing</span></a> <a href="https://starlite.rodeo/tags/colonialism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>colonialism</span></a></p>

Ash<p>Found a real tin photo while looking through photos with my step mom. It's so interesting to see how the technology has progressed through the ages just by looking at family photos. Also if you haven't it might be a good idea to start scanning your family photos.
