Reading The Internet Con by @pluralistic. Great book. A point to dig deeper in, IMO, is how much the Internet could be like a science fiction/fantasy reality with more #interoperability. More than just freedom of social media platforms. A big trope in fiction is that the genius engineer or scrappy wizard can integrate seemingly unrelated things together to create something completely new. This is how universal computers were made to work, and what the Internet could be.
@pluralistic any two computer technologies can interface with each other, limited only by human ingenuity and imagination. Just like magic or science fiction physics. We just live in Internet feudalism where all these barriers are put in place by the rulers, who only get to do so because of favorable policy. IOW the dark wizards have made their magic ubiquitous, mandatory, and unnecessarily difficult to work with to maintain ubiquity.
