@nico198X I don't think it's quite meant as that type of software. If you want a true replacement of Google Photos, you'll have to look into #selfhosted software for backing up purposes. Or if it's just a photo album app you want, you could look at alternative gallery apps like #AvesLibre (on #FDroid).

I use #Syncthing to back up my photos without Google Photos, myself. I've heard good things about #Immich as a self-hosted alternative, too: github.com/immich-app/immich

@smoltron I have only very low power CPUs at home. Except the son's ps5. According to docs #immich sends only preview images to remote machine learning, perhaps it would work to use the #OpenShift AI cluster from datacenter to run the mass recognition once. Or perhaps just easier to bring home some laptop with GPU for a day. Need to think a bit. But Immich was super nice find!

I've spent the eventing working on this project.

This afternoon I was chatting with @fabrixxm about editing flow with #immich. Upload all photos an than? Download, edit with gimp and upload again?

The idea behind this project is to be able browse the images on #immich server with file system, open the image with gimp and saving the jpg it will be uploaded back.

It's still a POC, but any suggestion, help and boost will be appreciated.

Vous avez d'autres alternatives à me conseiller ? On vient de me parler de #Immich par exemple. J'aimerais avoir quelques retours d'expérience. 😃

If you are going to copy your photos from Google Photos to Immich, remember that it will take some time!
I have ~300k photos and videos.
Downloading ~1.4T of Takeout took 2 days.
Copying and unzipping these on my debian box took about half a day.
Importing using immich-go took a day.
And immich is still running background jobs a day later.

(most annoying: a) why did I use tgz over zip? b) restarting those failed takeout downloads every now and again)

@ironicbadger & @ChrisLAS - if y’all are going to do a segment on #Immich kiosk, I’d be happy to preemptively share what I’ve got going with it. to;dr is a little pi-sized “digital photo frame” on my desk & a 65” tv near my front door that has digital art via Immich kiosk and a home dashboard that can be switched to with the push of a zigbee button. The TV and an old tiny Lenovo to run it were acquired for free. The Pi one is all #Nix-ified too.

@tonyp OK, so this I did not expect: I have put `/var/lib/docker` onto a separate disk, because I expected that to be where all data for all images would go.
But no!
immich stores photos in `/data/compose/*` for some reason.
That would explain why my first test failed after uploading a bunch of photos...
Will have to reorganise...
