Cassian [main]<p>Oh hey instance admins, if you have rules against misinformation and/or spam - would you consider adding AI slop to your definitions thereof?</p><p>Edit: I am not using "AI slop" to refer to anything generated by AI. I'm using the definition that's described by its Wikipedia page: <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AI_slop" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AI_slop</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p><p>Low quality, often nonsense, used as clickbait or to sell dross or to make money from advertising, etc. You know, spam or misinformation but made by an LLM or image diffusion thing to make money for lazy humans with no morals.</p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/MastoMeta" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MastoMeta</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/MastoAdmin" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MastoAdmin</span></a></p>
Cassian<p>You know that thing where there's a pile of hashtags at the bottom of a Mastodon post, and sometimes they get collapsed into a semi-hidden list, but sometimes they stay visible and look awful and spammy?</p><p>The trick is, it must be the last paragraph and it must be all hashtags and only hashtags. If you put anything after it, tag another account in the hashtag paragraph, include any punctuation, or split the list with new lines, the hashtags won't get condensed.</p><p><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/meta" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>meta</span></a> <a href="https://toot.wales/tags/MastoMeta" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MastoMeta</span></a> <a href="https://toot.wales/tags/MastodonMeta" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MastodonMeta</span></a></p>

Rusty Corgi<p>I complained about BlueSky a little so I'm gonna balance it out by saying that Mastodon's federation options suck and we need a way to boot remote servers off of our federated timeline and hashtag lookup without outright silencing every single person on that server. :neodog__w_:</p><p><a href="https://cubhub.social/tags/Mastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Mastodon</span></a> <a href="https://cubhub.social/tags/MastodonMeta" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MastodonMeta</span></a> <a href="https://cubhub.social/tags/MastoMeta" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MastoMeta</span></a></p>

Rusty Corgi<p>I like responding to people's Fedi posts so they feel like others are engaging since Fedi is definitely a lot smaller than, like, Twitter. I don't want them to think it's a ghost town here. Sometimes I wonder if I'm annoying though. :corgi_wtf1:</p><p>(Not to say I <em>only</em> do it because I want people to feel engaged with, I way prefer to use social media to talk to people instead of only thumbing up their posts. :blobfoxcute: )</p><p><a href="https://cubhub.social/tags/Mastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Mastodon</span></a> <a href="https://cubhub.social/tags/MastodonMeta" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MastodonMeta</span></a> <a href="https://cubhub.social/tags/MastoMeta" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MastoMeta</span></a> <a href="https://cubhub.social/tags/Fediverse" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Fediverse</span></a> <a href="https://cubhub.social/tags/FediMeta" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FediMeta</span></a></p>
Nemo_bis 🌈<p>There&#39;s a lot to say about the new <a href="https://mamot.fr/tags/Mastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Mastodon</span></a> version but the most impactful change for me so far is the new boost icon. It now visibly changes when pressed, while previously it would barely change colour/thickness, a difference often too subtle to notice on screens with low constrast/brightness.</p><p><a href="https://mamot.fr/tags/FediMeta" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>FediMeta</span></a> <a href="https://mamot.fr/tags/MastoMeta" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>MastoMeta</span></a> <a href="https://mamot.fr/tags/MastoDev" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>MastoDev</span></a></p>

Rusty Corgi<p>If any Mastodon admins are dealing with spam account sign-ups, it's worth noting that these accounts seem to universally use disposable email providers and burner email address. There's a GitHub repo that tracks these providers. All moderation inquiries are sent to a user's email on Mastodon, so there's no legitimate reason any Mastodon user should be using a disposable email address. As such, there's a git repository that tracks these disposable email providers. There are also bash scripts that will import the repository into tootctl for you.</p><p>The disposable email git repo can be found here:</p><ul><li><a href="https://github.com/disposable-email-domains/disposable-email-domains" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Disposable Email Domains</a></li></ul><p>And the bash scripts can be found here:</p><ul><li><a href="https://www.dzombak.com/blog/2024/02/Blocking-disposable-email-domains-in-Mastodon.html" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Docker</a></li><li><a href="https://codeberg.org/stvo/mastodon-ansible-nodocker/src/branch/main/playbooks/templates/home/mastodon/addmaildomains.sh.j2" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Regular/Not Docker</a></li></ul><p>Simply clone the repo and copy the bash script onto your server, then edit the script to point at your Mastodon installation and the directory you cloned the repository to, and it should handle the rest.</p><p>Side note: I checked our logs and we had a huge spike in attempted sign-ups from a bunch of different disposable email addresses this week, so I can confirm that blocking them definitely works.</p><p><a href="https://cubhub.social/tags/Mastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Mastodon</span></a> <a href="https://cubhub.social/tags/MastoMeta" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MastoMeta</span></a> <a href="https://cubhub.social/tags/MastodonAdmin" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MastodonAdmin</span></a> <a href="https://cubhub.social/tags/MastoAdmin" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MastoAdmin</span></a> <a href="https://cubhub.social/tags/Spam" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Spam</span></a> <a href="https://cubhub.social/tags/Spamwave" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Spamwave</span></a></p>
