[Thread] Oh boy...! I made the *mistake* of looking at the US #ProtestLaw Tracker I had posted on Mastodon a while back. YIKES! Not just state laws, but some pretty nasty federal ones. And interestingly enough, #Maine, #Vermont, #Delaware and #NewMexico are the only states who haven't considered passing laws restricting protest. "The Justice Department revoked funding for the Maine Department of Corrections over the state’s placement of a transgender woman in a women’s prison, Attorney General Pam Bondi said Tuesday.

"Bondi made the announcement during an interview with Fox News, saying the department pulled all 'nonessential' funding from the state corrections department on Monday after federal officials learned 'a guy' was serving time in one of the state’s two women’s facilities. Bondi said the inmate was convicted of murder.

"The loss in funding for the department totaled upward of $1.5 million, according to Fox News. The Justice Department did not return a request for comment.

"In a news release, Maine’s corrections department said it received formal notice from the Department of Justice on Monday that certain federal grants 'are being terminated because they ‘no longer effectuate the program goals or agency priorities.' The cuts will impact state-run initiatives related to #SubstanceAbuseTreatment and support for #children with incarcerated parents, the corrections department said.

"The notice from the Justice Department, a copy of which was obtained by The Hill, does not mention transgender inmates. 'While the Department is aware of related public statements by the United States Attorney General, the notice is the only communication that has been received by the Department,' Maine’s corrections department said.

"The move by the Justice Department is the latest development in a monthlong battle between the Trump administration and Maine over the state’s refusal to ban transgender student-athletes from girls’ and women’s sports as ordered by the president."

"Dr. Lowry serves on the faculty at the University of Southern Maine. He earned his BS from MIT and both Master’s and PhD from UNC Chapel Hill, all in anthropology. He is an anthropologist and member (citizen) of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina. He grew up in the #Lumbee community in Robeson County, North Carolina. In 2021-22, he was Distinguished Fellow in #NativeAmerican Studies at MIT, where he led a new conversation at MIT about the responsibilities of MIT (and science/technology education, more generally) in the theft of American Indian land and the dismantling of American Indian health and community. From 2022 to 2023, he was Visiting Senior Fellow in the School of Social Policy at Brandeis University. At USM, Dr. Lowry runs the #IndigenousRelationshipsLab as a place for and commitment to #justice and re-mattering of American Indian and other Indigenous peoples from #Maine, to #Massachusetts, to #NorthCarolina. The lawsuit, filed Monday by Attorney General Aaron Frey, challenges the U.S. Department of Agriculture's decision to halt federal funds over Maine's policy regarding #TransgenderAthletes.

"Maine Attorney General Aaron Frey filed a federal lawsuit against the Trump administration Monday challenging the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s decision to withhold federal funds over Maine’s policy allowing transgender athletes to compete in girls high school sports.
Frey’s office said funds withheld by the administration are used to feed children in schools, child care centers and after-school programming, as well as disabled adults in congregate settings.

"It is the first lawsuit to result from the Trump administration’s actions targeting Maine over trans athletes.

"'Under the banner of keeping children safe, the Trump administration is illegally withholding grant funds that go to keeping children fed,' Frey said in a written statement. 'This is just another example where no law or consequence appears to restrain the administration as it seeks capitulation to its lawlessness. The President and his cabinet secretaries do not make the law and they are not above the law, and this action is necessary to remind the President that Maine will not be bullied into violating the law.'"

"According to organizers, 3,000 people attended the #PortlandME rally, which was just one of more than 20 events held across Maine as part of national '#HandsOff!' actions to demonstrate widespread opposition to the gutting of the federal government spearheaded by billionaire advisor #ElonMusk.

"The town mall in #BrunswickME, where over 500 people rallied, was a sea of homemade signs. Maine Senate President Mattie Daughtry, who represents the district, was among the crowd and noted it was one of the few times in her life she’s seen 'this many people gathered for something like this.'

"The message, she said, is 'to listen to the people.'

"'A lot of the signs that I saw were about ‘Hands off our Social Security,’ ‘Hands off our libraries,’ ‘Hands off our health care,’ I think what we’re saying is, you can’t completely unravel the fabric of our society without people noticing.'"
