The tougher hurdle is getting 4% of the vote before getting AEC financial support. I haven’t done the maths, but 4% seems high. As it stands, someone thinking of running for office would need to have a hefty kitty before even starting out - which favours the rich and party nominees. There are entities, such as Climate200, Clive Palmer, and many others… willing to finance independents spanning the political spectrum though, so it’s not impossible. The important thing is that the rules are about making sure only genuine candidates are afforded financial help, and to prevent ‘non-contestants’ from filling up a candidates list for a laugh or without a chance of success.
