Many of us have left the big social media platforms; far more of us *wish* we could leave them; and even those of us who've escaped from Facebook/Insta and Twitter still spend a lot of time trying to figure out how to get the people we care about off of them, too.

Interesting point, only that the evolution of friendica and hubzilla addons, have proven again and again that this is not true and no choice. When ever the land lords see the threat, measure the threat, they'll lock your option out, change the API, disrupt the process, burn down the bridge you started to build for some time and you are back to square one. They even did that with XMPP.
Interoperability is no choice because it's threat to their basic business model.
And when ever you (we) manage to create the option, they will tear it down once it's about to flourish. And the time we invested with the restricted resources we have will just be lost. That happened with fb connectors, twitter API's and so on. And it will happen again and again because it's logic, it makes sense for them and their share holders.
This is so obvious, it's mind blowing that you people don't get that.

They are locked in because they lack perspective and self-discipline and because their dopamine loops have been hacked by evil techbro sorcerers who used Big Data to fashion history's first functional mind-control ray resulting in real, material things.
They are locked in because actually they don't care because they lack way to much perspective and self discipline and are way to happy with their dopamine.
They are as locked in as the bodies in matrix movies that provide the system with energy and sustain the system with their energy. They are their self fulfilling prophecy, because they don't care enough, they don't understand enough and they never experienced the alternative.
They are as locked in as Germans were in their society in 1933 and as we all are in our consumerist customs and daily life in the face of climate change.
And that's why this whole discussion ultimately is kinda senseless and useless because what climate change will impose on the societies will shadow everything you (we) can imagine.
They could work on plan B and leaving step by step, building up first the alternative till they come to the tipping point and than move ultimately.
But, they wont because they are way to hypnotized and "programed" by their acquired customs. Even choosing bluesky as the option just proves that point again.
As Malcom stated, they are "house negros".
@utopiarte For a person who claims to want to help your friends leave social media, you sure seem to hold them in enormous contempt, offer them no grace, and extend zero empathy to them.
@pluralistic If that were the case, if I "extend zero empathy to them" I wouldn't have been able to write what I wrote, pointing out the escape route to begin with. Not to mention to have set up forum pages and fediVerse instances for a decade and a half, and explaining them again and again the reality they were creating.
I'm writing this from a shit hole country down south from you, way down. The very same people who once every year make big manifestations because they still are searching for their missing buddies from the last dictatorship, in part organized by a "plan Condor" from within the US, are discussing their political issues on the platforms of the land lords, aiding the system of the land lord, and aiding the stock market value of the land lord. They never extended their empathy to me, instead they laughed about me, called me stupid and idealistic, loured and emboldened my kids to participate and be conditioned on those platforms. Till the day they lost the elections and realized that they had to go door to door to evade the algorithms and programing of the land lords.
My empathy in the first place is to be sincere and to tell the truth.
A medic isn't empathic if he shies away from telling the diagnostic as it is, he is empathic if he points out how to reach the exit door as good as possible, like I did by stating:

"The South American left" and their politicians embraced facebook and twitter because they think that it suits their goal to come into power and to stay in power. They gave a f** about democracy, the secrecy of the vote, the freedom of opinion and to be able to create your own opinion. They gave a f** about safety of their voters and people.
It's all about power, and they think they are smarter than the enemy who is draining them since the arrival of Columbus. They laugh about the Indigenous who traded gold for mirrors, and sold their people, their ideals, their thoughts and brains, their souls, while not only dismissing our adverts to not be foolish but leaving us alone in the rain.

@pluralistic There's an exceptional example of this kind of hard-to-organize collective actions going on today, Jan 20th: many Spanish entities and persons are closing their Twitter accounts today and are coming in a coordinate manner to Mastodon. They're using #juntas / #juntes / #xuntas to introduce themselves and are coordinated around @vamonosjuntas. So far, it seems like a great success. More info: https://www.vamonosjuntas.org :)
