@pluralistic they're afraid people will smuggle satellite phones inside them.
@pluralistic I think they played Glastonbury in the late '80s.
@paulcowdell @pluralistic It doesn't mention durian…

Are you suggesting coconuts migrate?
@davidtheeviloverlord @pluralistic they get sea passage for free. Not the deal it once was.
@johnefrancis @davidtheeviloverlord @pluralistic this could be an issue of wet versus dry migration also drifting in sea currents versus wing-powered forced propulsion… riveting stuff…
@MarkDW @davidtheeviloverlord @pluralistic wing loadings in the context of coconut transportation, the eternal question
@johnefrancis @davidtheeviloverlord @pluralistic indeed. Swallows and amazons.
@pluralistic they don't need to.
They travel by swallow. Tethered under the dorsal wing
@chrisgerhard @pluralistic and what's the swallow's maximum air speed? And are we talking about African or European swallows?
@pluralistic dried coconut (copra) is sufficiently hazardous that it can’t even be carried on cargo-only aircraft. It combusts spontaneously. The things you learn in Dangerous Goods Awareness courses.
@raaahbin @pluralistic so Monty Python is technically on the no-fly list?
@raaahbin @pluralistic I remember talking about copra in 3rd grade geography class back in the mid-60s. Bet they didn't know about this "feature" of some tropical country's chief exports back then.
@pluralistic They might explode in an unpressurised hold, but not this century, surely! Unless (and remember they grow, and are therefore designed to work, at sea level) they aren't actually strong enough for the 8,000' cabin altitude?
Maybe this airline had a weak one explode once and have decided "never again"?
@pluralistic "You put the ‘nut in the overhead
And close it right up.
You put the 'nut in the overhead
And close it right up …”
@pluralistic i’m somewhat baffled by the inclusion of “gps device” as a forbidden category, does that include smartphones? Or do they mean something else
@pluralistic if your batteries are going to 'splode, it better be in the passenger compartment!
@pluralistic Spotted that when I was on an internal flight in India earlier in the year. And no cricket bats in your cabin baggage either.
@pluralistic
Could a coconut explode at the reduced pressure in an airliner? :-)

@pluralistic
I used to work on a small freighter (under SAIL, like actual wind power) transporting copra—coconut shell semi dried for oil pressing—between the Kiribati
@paraplegic_racehorse @pluralistic
This is excellent trivia
@paraplegic_racehorse @pluralistic that was a fascinating micro story. Sailing on a freighter in the South Pacific transporting coconut products must have had some "interesting" moments.
