@nemobis not surprised. so the application of this law is totally arbitrary and at the discretion of the italian state and its cultural heritage institutions. Which, again, means that you'd better not use anything.
@awinkler Yes. We've been telling the ministry for years. Instead of seeing it as a problem, the ministry has encouraged employees to weaponise this tool more. "Oooh, good point you're making, Parliament granted us a tool for ransom extraction and we hadn't fully used it so far! Let's fix that!"
@nemobis are there any statistics/estimates on the ransom money they've made so far - directly/indirectly?
@awinkler The ministry boasted circa 2020 that they manage to cover the salary of two low-level functionaries in Rome. The most aggressive entities (like Gallerie dell'Accademia) have boasted about collecting figures which would barely cover the salary of the functionary assigned to ransom letter writing, let alone the lawyers involved in international lawsuits.
@nemobis mi piacerebbe molto saperne di più. Ti viene in mente dove potrei andare a cercare informazioni su questa vicenda? sarebbe in ogni caso una bella ricerca che potrebbe sfruttare anche le possibilità del FOIA. Ma forse questa ricerca è già stata fatta.
