Snarking at techbros

Techbros between 2017-2021 when I'm like "Hey don't do research on scholar.social users without our explicit consent":

"Hey fuck you. We *can* do research on you, so really you were asking for it. By the way fuck you, you don't know anything about ethics."

Techbros in 2021 when they are the subject of research without their consent:

[Absolute breathless flabbergasted screeching indignation and pearl-clutching]

I wasn't aware that Linux kernel developers were doing unethical research on scholar.social , or defending those who did so. Maybe the victims of unethical research should sympathise with each other and work together against the problem?

+1 for countering the oversimplification. I often cringe when I see such words like "techbros". Surely the FOSS community has done service for the greater good, and includes respectful people who don't deserve all that hate. It is same kind of undue hate every Muslim would receive when some get radicalized.

That said I also fail to see the "success" of scholar.social. There has been several "social studies" run on the whole Fediverse, including scholar.social and a Terms of Service didn't stop this from happening, right?

In the Linux Kernel development, they rely on a web of trust and they do have a code of conduct in place now. I have no clue what more can be done there.

@ashwinvis I appreciate the concurrence. To me, the original "snarking at techbros" comment seemed unfair, but I wasn't sure adding a gentle dissenting comment would serve any purpose.

I did not bother mentioning the OP based on my previous experiences. There are some strong opinions out there with little room for a healthy conversation.

Snarking at techbros

@ashwinvis Hmm. Looks like the OP has blocked me. A shame.

I disagree with him on some topics (very rarely I comment), but I often enjoy reading him, especially the jokes.

(He blocked my account at my former, now defunct, instance when I defended the anti-fascist bona fides of the Canadian military. I mean, they literally invaded Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany.)

I'd prefer if he'd just mute me...
