Didn't follow the http://mastory.social/ discussion. Anyone has a link?
But if some people considered that what they published in their profiles was not *public* (and published there information that can endanger them), they must be brought to understand that they were misled..
Indexing profiles is ordering information that is publicly available already and would help everyone on the network (and therefore help further users to join).
I hope that a common understanding will be reached here <3
@amaelle_g yes and I don't have much to add to what has been said by @jz :) The methods exist to limit indexing profiles, some instances have started to use it, but anyway, even with a robots.txt you can't be sure that all crawler will respect the disallowance. And as soon as you are connected to someone in another instance, the profiles is linked and can be "discovered" by a crawler.
@jz @amaelle_g I understand the concern and therefore have added an opt-out option, but I did it because I was willing to do it, other crawlers probably won't mind and published profiles will be indexed for sure
@jz Actually it looks like the discussion happened after I tooted it https://mstdn.fr/@amaelle_g/66947. You can ask @symac who's the developer :)
