Each message ("toot") can be shared (select with icon under editor) with either:
🌍 the whole world
🔓 the whole world, but be not further listed in your timeline
🔒 only followers
✉️ only some people (ie. private message)
Different timelines (icons on top left of default interface), to see more messages/people to follow:
🏠 "home" shows everyone you follow
👥 "local" is everyone on your instance
🌍 "federated" is local+everybody followed by someone in your instance
🚫 Some instances have moderation and content filtering/blocking policies: admin(s) decide for everyone to block content (whole instances, people, or keywords). Choices can be discussed/made transparent.
Some find this makes them feel safer 🤗
⚙️ One can filter themselves ("filters" in settings ⚙️ menu), and decide, without having to disclose it, a list of keywords to remove from their timelines.
✋ One can mute or block people.
Some find this empowers them and give them more autonomy 💪
@jz Is there a technical way to know details about the "upstream filtering" of the instance we use ?
Maybe there ought to be be some kind of "instance observatory".
I'm totally fine with filtering when I know roughtly what there is in the filter-box. And vague political statment of two sentence in the description of each instance is pretty light, right ? ^^'
@jz some time ago we copied the content that had been written by @Ca_Gi and others (cf here, it also contains link to the Etherpad used for the write-up). This proved quite valuable for us to get a hands-on start on the #fediverse with Mastodon/Pleroma. The document is especially fitting people coming from the #birdsite, as it presents and explains the differences.
