@gc@tomxcd this is similar to me. In 1993 I was an undergrad and my summer job involved programming for a fast growing electronics factory on their expensive unix boxes.
At the end of the summer they gave me a contract which turned into my first (long defunct) startup.
We wrote programs that combined Perl with a core library written in C and (some XWindows toolkit I don't remember.) Ran just fine on GNU/Linux which meant we were able to bootstrap without VC.
