#5yrsago Tony Benn, secret mounter of illegal Parliamentary plaques https://boingboing.net/2014/03/14/tony-benn-secret-mounter-of-i.html
@doctorow "A workshop, not a museum" - brilliant. Sadly it is still the Museum of Privilege, and as we've seen recently barely a finger gets lifted to do any work.
@doctorow would there be a way to caption this wonderful photo for the visually disabled?
Normally, I simply ignore these when they don't have reader-captions. But this is particularly beautiful thing you've shared here, and I would like to leverage my (relative) privilege to extend access.
If you don't see an easy way yourself, I'll happily type the text into a new toot answering the original one - if that's okay with you.
IN LOVING MEMORY OF I
EMILY WILDING DAVISON
IN THIS BROOM CUPBOARD EMILY
WILDING DAVISON HID HERSELF,
ILLEGALLY, DURING THE NIGHT OF
THE 1911 CENSUS.
SHE WAS A BRAVE SUFFRAGETTE I
CAMPAIGNING FOR VOTES FOR
WOMEN AT A TIME WHEN PARLIAMENT
DENIED THEM THAT RIGHT.
IN THIS WAY SHE WAS ABLE TO
RECORD HER ADDRESS, ON THE
NIGHT OF THAT CENSUS, AS BEING
“THE HOUSE OF COMMONS; THUS
MAKING HER CLAIM TO THE SAME
POLITICAL RIGHTS AS MEN.
EMILY WILDING DAVISON DIED IN
JUNE 1913 FROM INJURIES SUSTAINED
WHEN SHE THREW HERSELF UNDER
THE KING'S HORSE AT THE DERBY
TO DRAW PUBLIC ATTENTION TO THE
INJUSTICE SUFFERED BY WOMEN.
BY SUCH MEANS WAS DEMOCRACY
WON FOR THE PEOPLE OF BRITAIN.
Notice placed here by Tony Benn MP
“T must tell you, Mr. Speaker, that I am going to put a
plaque in the House, I shall have it made myself and
screwed on the doon of the broom cupboard in the Crypt.”
