There are lots of Fediverse apps on @fdroidorg, the free open alternative to Google Play. Some Fediverse apps are exclusive to F-Droid!
Unlike Google Play, F-Droid apps are all free, open source and privacy-friendly.
F-Droid can be installed on any Android phone. It's slightly tricky to install because Google tries to block any alternative app stores. However, once it's been installed it is just as easy to use as Google Play.
There are some simple step-by-step F-Droid installation instructions here:
You can find out more about F-Droid on its official site at https://f-droid.org
1. At least, it worked well both in terms of stability and supported (necessary) functionalities (calls, SMS, network/data…) years ago when a I had a compatible device in working conditions. I haven't had a chance to test newer versions on a phone.
@brie So is android. Even AOSP without prorietary, vendor-specific additonal stuff (drivers, firmwares…). But android is even more locked down (no root access without exploit, no password on key-bases authentification to su - once You rooted Youri device… ).
proprietary blobs for hardware support, I don't know any “debian without contrib/non-free repos" equivalent for phones. Hardware makers lock everything, making it unfortunately impossible to run on 100% Libre Software. Replicant doesn't support shit and is still android-based. So unless we get @brie @PINE64 @e_mydata @fdroidorg @nitrokey @xixiangdong @feditips @iode - 2/5
truly open hardware one day, which is unlikely to happen because it requires libre SoC, and libre GSM/LTE-A modules that works on phone carriers networks… A 100% libre OS for phones is just a nice dream.
costs) and in which condition you'd with the phone to be, such phones are not always easy to find. Especially is you wish to refurbished version instead of just used - random condition from a random person on the Internet
There is newer devices which are compat with Sailfish OS, unofficially? but it's either expensive for shit hardware, and shit maintenance because "hey look at our latest device, we stop support for the previous one so you buy again" (Gemini) or expensive and still work in progress (F(x) Tec Pro 1 X will probably support Sailfish OS, since the Pro 1 already does but IIRC it's even more expensive than the X version)
