is somebody really skilled at origami and folding and packaging and can provide quick instructions how this DIY cd packaging is made? i think at first it looks really simple, but i'm not sure if there's something else that it holding the pack together or at least closed?

@luka I think it's simple : the cd hold the lower part, and the upper part is held by the little additional rebate part that goes inside (that they cut the corners)
it's nice ; I would copy the cd files, throw the cd and keep their pocket art actually ;)

@Olm_e when you say "the cd hold the lower part" you mean that the CD is actually in the "upper pocket" of the lower part - the pocket closer to the opening?

@luka I think yes the cd in the upper pocket of the lower part is keeping the lower part from opening if the upper part is closed, and the upper part hold on this by the lid. a nice self holding trick ;)

so i tried to make a schematic in inkscape how to fold a piece of hard paper (scheleshamer?) A4 size to get this diy packaging (see toot.si/@luka/27947). it's actually on a grid of equiliteral triangles with 72mm size of a side.

i'll share the inkscape svg and a pdf or something soon. i would love to find original designer to credit her/him.

lines:
black = cut
dashed = optional cut
blue = fold in
red = fold out

@luka hey ! I was testing it too and here is my version of a simple that I did on paper also ( photo later)
I remember that one fanimation film I participated to years ago had some concept sleaves like that too ... ;) (now with correct measure) mamot.fr/media/YxDRyjV84yozTdN

@Olm_e

awesome!

inspired by your version I actually improved mine a bit. tested and it looks like this is what it is. folding is actually a bit tricky, but i guess one has to try couple of times to see where to take care.

this one is for grabs I think. maybe there should be an instructable with how to fold and insert the cd and with photos of final product(s).

Olm-e @Olm_e

@luka excellent ! it also take care of some margin for the cd thickness as I see :)

too bad that format is really going to die ... (I'm afraid to try my "old" work >10y cd-R archives .... :z )
it seems that even the commercial ones don't keep over time and that this technology is apparently a hickup in the History... :D

@Olm_e yes. but what supercedes it? what is the format with which a musician can give somebody into somebodies hands? i'm experimenting with USBs, also tapes, ,... i'd like to have this discussion with people around...

what people prefer when it comes to physical form?

#mastomusic #mastoart #music #medium

@luka that's a good question ... seeing how things goes, I think any distribution means is worth the try, physical but also electronically, with blogs, curated labels repositories, p2p and social networks, and having a public "backup" like archive.org in a long term thinking.
I have some old things I would like to release; never had the environment to do it properly... (no way with the current music industry model between the fruit and the juicer... )
I'll CC when renovating my site ;)
