- Ursula K. Le Guin, La prochaine guerre ("the next war" in finding my elegy, p.101)

(traduit par mes soins)

(alternative: elle aura lieu/elle prendra du temps/elle prendra des vies/et les gaspillera)

its cool how we are spending hundreds of millions of dollars on self driving car research when that level of funding and research commitment could massively improve public transit

This is Deinococcus radiodurans. These bacteria may be the toughest organisms in the world, surviving dehydration, cold, acid, and vacuum, and withstanding more radiation than probably any other living thing.

Some scientists have considered using them as a way of storing data to survive an apocalypse. In 2003, researchers encoded the song It's A Small World into DNA, engineered it into D. radiodurans, and managed to retrieve it without errors 100 generations later.

Just been thinking recently about something very important. I've been seeing lots of hatred and bigotry lately thrown towards disabled folk and home/houseless folk, not on Masto but elsewhere on the internet.

These two minorities deserve just as much, if not MORE respect than any other, because they're the only two that you could instantly become a part of.

The natural reactor under Oklo generated around about 100 kilowatts of thermal power during its time, not much at all. But it ran and it ran, under the continent which we had yet to even evolve on, long before we had ever split the atom, nature was once again ahead of us.

Roughly 1.7 billion years ago, though a crack in the Earth, a seep of groundwater began to boil. No volcanoes were near, no lava. No, under what is modern day Gabon, a rush of water had begun to act as a neutron moderator for a vein of uranium rich minerals. The heat generated by nuclear fission caused the groundwater to boil away, which slowed and stopped the reaction. 3 hours later, the groundwater would rush in again, and the cycle repeated. Over, and over, the Earth's own and only naturally occurring nuclear reactor ran naturally for hundreds of thousands of years, until eventually it ran out of enough fissile materials to sustain a chain reaction.

this is my homeland. this is where my people existed for thousands of years in peace with nature and with other indigenous peoples (for the most part)

now it's home to white people, golf courses, and seaside bed and breakfasts

while my people live in poverty in a remote valley a long, windy, dangerous road away from civilization

laughing at people who think that “what about disabled people” is a huge gotcha argument in favor of personal cars. do you know how much a personal car or van with accessibility features costs? do you honestly think disabled people are not already taking public transit, and would not greatly benefit from its expansion?

I didn't realize until Covid how some people didn't go to restaurants for the food, but because they liked to fantasize that they have their own personal slave to berate.

The news about DAPL is medicine to us all who fought against the pipeline.

But we must not forget the political prisoners who aren't free after standing for the water and for us all.
